First Year Missionaries



  • Overview
    • This fall, your formation will include taking one course and meeting 1:1 with a coach. 

    • You get to choose one of 3 courses on offer this fall.
      • Please discuss with your Chapter Leader before registering.
      • You may enroll in 2 courses if desired. 

    • Coaching: You'll meet once a month with an SPO Leader or staff alumni to work through exercises in self-awareness and self-leadership. 
      • It's also a space to process your role as a missionary and ask questions. 
      • When registering for courses you'll be able to indicate some preferences in who your mentor will be. 

    • Time: 
      • 1 hr 15 min per month for your course
      • 1 hr per month in mentorship (scheduled between you and your mentor) 
        • Some outside prep work for mentorship, varies during semester. 

  • Courses

      First Year Courses (Choose at least one)
      1. Becoming Good Soil
      Centering on the concept Relationship - Identity - Mission, this course will open up how we can abide in the Lord while serving in full-time mission. We'll hear rich wisdom on this topic and then discuss how to apply it to our lives. 

      Typical Structure: 15 min teaching, 1hr discussion.  

      Thursday at 9:30am CST on Sept. 18th, Oct. 16th, Nov. 13th and Dec. 11th
      2. Think Like a Missionary
      How can we take on the heart and mind of a missionary? This course will guide us to taking on God's heart for others, learn principles for relational evangelization and other crucial aspects of missionary life. 

      Typical Structure: 15 min teaching, 1hr discussion.

      Tuesday at 3pm CST on Sept 23, Oct 21, Nov 11 & Dec 3
      3. Time for God 
      Members of this course will read "Time for God" by Jacques Philippe over the semester. Each course meeting will time to discuss the concepts of the book for ourselves and how we can accompany others in their prayer. 

      Typical Structure: 1hr 15 min discussion 
      *Reading outside of the sessions: approx. 30 pages per month.

  • Overview
    • This fall, your formation will include taking one course and reading "Deep Conversion, Deep Prayer" by Thomas Dubay. 

    • You can choose from 3 courses on offer this fall. 
      • Please discuss this with your Chapter Leader before registering.
      • You may enroll in 2 courses if desired. 
      • You may request to do coaching (meet 1:1 with a SPO Leader) to cover the course material rather than attend course sessions by emailing [email protected] by July 28th. 

    • Book Reading: We will send a reading guide for the semester. 
      • You will be expected to share a highlight from the book on occasion within your course. 
      • The final session of your course will be devoted to a final discussion of the book. 
      • If you did not get a book at MT25, please email [email protected] ASAP. 

    • Time: 
      • 1 hr 15 min per month for your course
      • Approx 30 pages of reading per month. 

  • Courses

      2nd Year Courses (Choose at least one)
      1. Prayer Ministry & Inner Healing
      This course will help us understand woundedness, inner healing, deliverance and how to pray with others as a missionary. We will discuss how to incorporate these principles into our own lives and in the mission. 

      Typical Structure: 20 min teaching, 45 min discussion + Book Sharing

      Wednesday  at 2pm CST on Sept. 10, Oct. 8, Nov. 5, and Dec. 3. 
      2. Truth & the Church 
      How do we come to know Revelation? How does the Church carry and communicate truth? What does Vatican II have to do with all that? These theological questions will be taught and discussed over the semester.  

      Typical Structure: Intermittent teaching and discussion

      Tuesday at 12:30pm CST on Sept 16, Oct 14, Nov 11 & Dec 2
      3. Next Generation Leader
      Learn about and discuss the qualities of a "Next Generation Leader" (from the book): Competence, Courage, Clarity, Coaching & Character. 

      Typical Structure:  15 min talk, 45 min discussion + Dubay Book Sharing 

      *"Next Generation Leader" Book can be provided by request as a companion to the course.
